UPDATE: With below-average temperatures and an additional threat of rain, the Jeffersonian Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry has postponed the start of its free outdoor movie series.

Originally scheduled for Friday, the first Stars Under the Stars event of the season is now scheduled for June 18 at the Ellis-Porter Riverside Park Amphitheater.

The annual JC Parks Stars Under the Stars film series returns this summer to Ellis-Porter Riverside Park after being held part of last year at Vivion Field in Washington Park due to construction of the new amphitheater.

The series kicks off Friday with “Beethoven” at the MU Capital Region Health Care Amphitheater in Riverside Park. Sponsored by the Jefferson City Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department, and Healthy Blue, the free movie – shown on a giant inflatable screen – begins at dusk, around 8:45 p.m.

JC Parks’ Special Events Program Director Phil Stiles has said that even with the new amphitheater, the series will play out much the same as in previous years. The biggest difference, he noted, will be the fixed seats in the amphitheater. There is room for around 500 seats in the stadium, and the seating on the lawn provides space for an additional 2,000 people.

Riverside Park’s new amphitheater saw its first performance, the Clay Walker and Tracy Lawrence concert, on Saturday. Other concerts and two more Stars Under the Stars events are scheduled throughout the summer.

The July 9 movie is “Sister Act” and August 6 will feature “Charlotte’s Web”.

“We wanted to do a comeback series this summer, showing older movies that I think people will enjoy changing up a bit,” Stiles said.

The Freshwater Church will offer free popcorn and pre-show activities on Friday, starting around 6:30 p.m.

Other concessions will be available for purchase. Stiles noted that different vendors will be on site throughout the summer series; a lemonade stand and Sno Biz will offer cool refreshments on Friday.

While there are no specific requirements related to the coronavirus, Stiles encouraged the crowds to disperse around the new amphitheater to stay safe.
